Obturamentella was named by Amsden (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Sieg Sepkoski's reference number: 25,764]. It is the type genus of Obturamentellidae.
It was assigned to Obturamentellidae by Savage and Goodwin (1998) and Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
