Paranorella was named by Cloud (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm-u P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Paranorella imperialis. It is the type genus of Paranorellinae, Paranorellidae.
It was assigned to Paranorellinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
