Moutonithyris anglia was named by Owen (1988). Its type specimen is BB82262, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hunstanton Red Rock Bed C, which is in an Albian offshore chalk in the Red Chalk Formation of the United Kingdom.
