Patagorhynchia was named by Allan (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Rhynchonella patagonica.

It was assigned to Aetheiinae by Cooper (1959); to Aethiinae by Chiesa et al. (1995); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hemithirididae by Williams et al. (2002).
