Platypus was named by Herbst (1793). It is extant. It is the type genus of Platypodinae, Platypodini.

It was assigned to Coleoptera by Herbst (1793); to Bostrichini by Latreille (1802); and to Platypodini by Wood and Bright (1992), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Legalov (2015).
