Taxonomy
Plecia hilaris was named by Heer (1849). Its type specimen is ETHZ 7281, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Oeningen (Lavater'schen collection), which is in a Sarmatian crater lake limestone in the Upper Freshwater-Molasse Formation of Germany.
