Petasmatherus was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse-u P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Petasmatherus opulus. It is the type genus of Petasmatheridae.
It was assigned to Petasmatheridae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
