Plicirhynchia was named by Allan (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Rhynchonella plicigera.

It was assigned to Hemithyridae by Cooper (1959); to Hemithyrididae by Chiesa et al. (1995); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Notosariidae by Williams et al. (2002).
