Pontisia was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7,1066]. It is the type genus of Pontisiinae, Pontisiidae.
It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pontisiinae by Williams et al. (2002).
