Rectirhynchia was named by Buckman (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Rhynchonella lopensis.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Norellinae by Williams et al. (2002).
