Rhytirhynchia was named by Cooper (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is extant. Its type is Hemithyris sladeni.

It was assigned to Basiliolinae by Cooper (1959) and Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
