Squamirhynchia was named by Buckman (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine-l J Plie-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1,56]. Its type is Squamirhynchia squamiplex.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyclothyridinae by Williams et al. (2002).
