Taxonomy
Stenoscisma was named by Conrad (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 411,1066]. It is the type genus of Stenoscismatidae, Stenoscismatinae.

It was reranked as Rhynchonella (Stenocisma) by Hall (1867); it was misspelled as Stenoschisma by Lesley (1890), Williams et al. (2002), Sepkoski (2002) and Shen et al. (2003).

It was assigned to Rhynchonella by Hall (1867); to Brachiopoda by Lesley (1890); to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); to Stenoscismatinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Stenoscismatidae by Shen et al. (2003).
