Limnodromus was named by Wied-Neuwied (1833). It is extant. It was considered unknown by Emslie (1998).

It was assigned to Calidriinae by Wetmore (1956); and to Scolopacidae by Emslie (1992), Emslie (1998) and Clements et al. (2017).
