Rhynchonella elegans was named by Von Hanstein (1879). Its type specimen is University of Bonn G.P.IBO.-Hanstein: 4 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cyclothyris elegans by Simon (1998); it was recombined as Septatoechia elegans by Simon and Motchurova-Dekova (2010).
