Protohippini was named by Quinn (1955). It was considered monophyletic by Prado and Alberdi (1996).

It was reranked as the subtribe Protohippina by Hulbert (1988) and Prado and Alberdi (1996).

It was assigned to Equini by Hulbert (1988) and Prado and Alberdi (1996); and to Equinae by Quinn (1955), Kelly (1995) and Hulbert and Whitmore (2006).
