Hamptonia was named by Walcott (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Cm uMid-m Sepkoski's reference number: 766]. Its type is Hamptonia bowerbanki. It is the type genus of Hamptoniidae.
It was assigned to Poecilosclerida by Sepkoski (2002); to Hamptoniidae by Finks et al. (2004); and to Demospongia by Bambach et al. (2007).
