Elcana beyrichi was named by Giebel (1856). It is an impression. Its type locality is Swanage/Purbeck (DORCM/BMNH) [C. Willcox Collection], which is in a Berriasian fluvial-lacustrine limestone in the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Panorpidium beyrichi by Jarzembowski (1996) and Eades et al. (2012).
