Acanthospirina was named by Schuchert and LeVene (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25,400].

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gerkispiridae by Williams et al. (2006).
