Acrospirifer was named by Wedekind (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-l D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 25]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Acrospiriferidae.

It was reranked as Hysterolites (Acrospirifer) by Amsden and Ventress (1963).

It was assigned to Hysterolites by Amsden and Ventress (1963); to Hysterolitinae by Johnson (1995); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acrospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006) and Boucot et al. (2008).
