Taxonomy
Ambocoelia was named by Hall (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 25,400]. Its type is Ambocoelia umbonata. It is the type genus of Ambocoeliidae, Ambocoeliinae.

It was reranked as Spirifer (Ambocoelia) by Schellwien (1900).

It was assigned to Spirifer by Schellwien (1900); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ambocoeliinae by George (1931) and Williams et al. (2006).
