Taxonomy

Libellula was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Libelluloidea, Libellulidae, Libellulinae.

It was assigned to Insecta by Geoffroy (1762); to Gymnoptera by Schaeffer (1766); to Unogata by Fabricius (1775); to Neuroptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Scopoli (1763), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Drury (1770), Müller (1776), Harris (1780) and Latreille (1796); to Libellulinae by Latreille (1802); to Odonata by Fabricius (1798) and Pongrácz (1931); to Libellulidae by Heer (1849) and Carpenter (1992); and to Libellulinae by Nel and Paicheler (1993) and Steinmann (1997).

Synonyms

Platetrum was named by Newman (1833). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Libellula by Carpenter (1992).
Libellula aglaia was named by Heer (1861).

It was considered a nomen nudum by Heer (1861), Kirby (1890) and Nel and Paicheler (1993).
Libellula knetti was named by Handlirsch (1907). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Falkenau, which is in a MN 4 lacustrine - large shale in the Cypris Formation of the Czech Republic.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Handlirsch (1907) and Nel and Paicheler (1993).
