Aperispirifer was named by Waterhouse (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm-u P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 427,712].

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Grantonini by Waterhouse (2004); and to Trigonotretinae by Williams et al. (2006).
