Belemnites sauvanausus was named by d'Orbigny (1843). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.R05791 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Rhopaloteuthis sauvanausa by d'Orbigny (1843) and Mariotti (2002).
