Taxonomy
Denaea meccaensis was named by Williams (1985). Its type specimen is PF 6767-LQXR 37 and is a compression fossil. It is the type species of Stethacanthulus.

It was recombined as Stethacanthulus meccaensis by Ivanov et al. (2013), Ivanov (2015) and Ivanov et al. (2020).
