Chapinella was named by Savage et al. (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 58]. Its type is Chapinella bucareliensis.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellacea by Savage et al. (1978); to Pugnacidae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002).

N. M. Savage et al. 1978Medium sized transverse Rhynchonellacea with an inflated dorsal valve, a strong fold and sulcus with few angu­ lar plications, and flanks with some weaker plications anterolaterally. The dental lamellae are short and the hinge plates are divided. No septalium or median septum is present.
