Choristites was named by Fischer de Waldheim (1825) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-u P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 1,400]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Choristitidae, Choristitinae.

It was reranked as Spirifer (Choristites) by Ozaki (1931).

It was assigned to Spirifer by Ozaki (1931); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Choristitinae by Williams et al. (2006).
