Cleiothyridina was named by Buckman (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is the type genus of Cleiothyrididinae.

It was reranked as Athyris (Cleiothyridina) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Athyris by Reed (1944); to Athyridinae by Brunton and Champion (1974); to Cleiothyrididinae by Williams et al. (2002); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Athyrididae by Savage et al. (1978) and Shen et al. (2003).
