Orthoceras sociale was named by Hall in Miller (1877). It is not extant. It is the type species of Isorthoceras.

It was recombined as Isorthoceras sociale by Niko (2007), Kröger (2013), Kröger and Aubrechtova (2017) and Kröger and Aubrechtová (2019).
