Crassumbo was named by Carter (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u Sepkoski's reference number: 955]. Its type is Crassumbo inornatus. It is the type genus of Crassumbidae.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Crassumbidae by Williams et al. (2006).
