Cratispirifer was named by Archbold and Thomas (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: P l Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Cratispirifer nuraensis.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Neospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
