Cyclospira was named by Hall and Clarke (1893). Its type is Orthis bisulcata.
It was assigned to Dayiidae by Macomber (1970); to Cyclospirinae by Mitchell (1977) and Jin and Chatterton (1997); to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002); to Cyclospiridae by Rõõmusoks (1964) and Williams et al. (2002); and to Protozygidae by Zhan and Jin (2005).
