Falospongia was named by Rigby (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 766]. Its type is Falospongia falata.

It was assigned to Haplosclerida by Sepkoski (2002); to Hazeliidae by Rigby and Collins (2004); and to Demospongia by Bambach et al. (2007).
