Taxonomy
Halichondrites was named by Walcott (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-u O Trem Sepkoski's reference number: 766,883,1066]. It is the type genus of Halichondritidae.
It was assigned to Haplosclerida by Sepkoski (2002); to Halichondritidae by Finks et al. (2004) and Rigby and Collins (2004); to Demospongia by Bambach et al. (2007); and to Porifera by Caron and Jackson (2008).
