Eolaballa was named by Liao and Meng (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 881,1128]. Its type is Eolaballa pristina.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Laballinae by Williams et al. (2006).
