Gypospirifer was named by Cooper and Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-u P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Gypospirifer nelsoni.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Gypospiriferinae by Waterhouse (2004); and to Neospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
