Heteraria was named by Cooper and Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Heteraria blakemorei.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eomartiniopsinae by Williams et al. (2006).
