Hysterolites was named by von Schlotheim (1820) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi-u D Sieg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25,538]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Hysterolitinae, Hysterolitidae.
It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hysterolitinae by Johnson (1995) and Williams et al. (2006).
