Ostrea cuccullata was named by Born (1778) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene-Recent; Indian Ocean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Ostrea (Lopha) cucullata by Ladd and Hoffmeister (1945); it was recombined as Crassostrea cucullata by Rao (1969); it was recombined as Gryphaea cucullata by Lumley et al. (1988); it was recombined as Lopha (Lopha) cucullata by Skwarko (1994); it was recombined as Saccostrea cuccullata by Lam and Morton (2009) and Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).
