Johnsonathyris was named by Savage et al. (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 53]. Its type is Johnsonathyris adrianensis.

It was assigned to Athyrididae by Savage et al. (1978); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Athyridinae by Williams et al. (2002).

N. M. Savage et al. 1978A small subglobular Athyridi­ dae, subcircular to pentagonal in outline. The anterior commissure is strongly uniplicate. Short, laterally convex dental lamellae lie close to the valve walls. The imperforate cardinal plate bears a shallow trough containing a small median ridge. The brachidium has spiralia with about six volutions j oined by a V-shaped jugum placed anterior of midlength. No jugal saddle or jugal stem is present.
