Kaninospirifer was named by Stepanov and Kulikov (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P u Sepkoski's reference number: ZR77]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Kaninospiriferinae by Waterhouse (2004); and to Neospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
