Taxonomy
Pycnaspis splendens was named by Orvig (1958). Its type specimen is USNM 21333 (detached exoskeletal plate, showing typical ornamentation) and is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Astraspis desiderata by Sansom et al. (1997).
