Lamnaespina was named by Waterhouse (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Lamnaespina transennata.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Punctospiriferidae by Williams et al. (2006).
