Lepidospirifer was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Lepidospirifer angulatus.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Neospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
