Martinia was named by M'Coy (1844) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 955,1128]. It is the type genus of Martiniidae, Martiniinae.

It was reranked as Spirifer (Martinia) by Schellwien (1900).

It was assigned to Spirifer by Schellwien (1900); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Martiniinae by Shen et al. (2003) and Williams et al. (2006).
