Tylocidaris salina was named by Cooke (1959) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Cotype used for type specimen.]. Its type specimen is USNM 498879b, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS Loc. 13395 - Richmond Branch [Salt Mountain Lmst], which is in a Thanetian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Salt Mountain Limestone Formation of Alabama.
