Ananchytes cinctus was named by Morton (1830). Its type specimen is ANSP 1485, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Cardiaster cinctus by Clark and Twitchell (1915); it was recombined as Holaster cinctus by Cooke (1942) and Cooke (1959).
