Taxonomy
Spatangus parastatus was named by Morton (1833). Its type specimen is ANSP 1487, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hemiaster parastatus by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Cooke (1942) and Cooke (1959).
