Xestotrema was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Punctospirellinae by Williams et al. (2006).
