Ananchytes cruciferus was named by Morton (1830). Its type specimen is ANSP 1464, a test, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Nucleolites cruciferus by Morton (1833); it was recombined as Nucleolites crucifer by Morton (1834); it was recombined as Pygorhynchus crucifer by Ravenel (1850); it was recombined as Echinobrissus crucifer by d'Orbigny (1854); it was recombined as Trematopygus crucifer by d'Orbigny (1858) and Cooke (1942); it was recombined as Trematopygus cruciferus by Clark and Twitchell (1915) and Clark (1915); it was recombined as Rhopostoma cruciferum by Cooke (1959); it was recombined as Plagiochasma cruciferum by Kroh (2001).
